ROYAL TRIANGLE HEALTHCARE ELECTIVE PROGRAM |
The Royal Triangle healthcare elective and internship programme provides placements designed specifically to meet the needs of students/applicants who wish to gain working experience in a developing country such as Ghana in West Africa. We focus on helping students to acquire lots of hands-on experience they definitely need for their career as medical doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Medical laboratory technologists/technicians, Pharmacists etc.. |

We also welcome all categories of qualified healthcare persons interested in internships or in acquiring practical experience in a developing country.
Healthcare volunteers, irrespective of background are encouraged to take advantage of our program to offer their voluntary support for healthcare in developing Ghana. |
Essentially a non-profit-making initiative, the Royal Triangle program permits Healthcare students and interns to get accommodated in well furnished apartments and go through rewarding hospital rotation full of hands-on experience. Our placements are flexible, very affordable and are designed specifically to meet the needs of the participants.
Placements are available all-year-round and for all categories of healthcare students and healthcare professionals.

Visiting persons get the opportunity to experience healthcare and medical practice in rural Ghana as well as semi-urban and urban Ghana.
The Healthcare Elective and Internship program is tailored to help students and interns develop their skills in solving health problems in the face of relatively very limited resources. Medical Students for instance would be expected to actively participate in the management of a wide range of health conditions using pure clinical skills. |

ELECTIVE SCHEDULE |
Application for placement can be done all year round. Maximum benefit could be derived if a participant enrol for not less than 2 weeks. It is worth noting, however, that the recommended duration of electives or volunteering is four weeks or more.
|
|
CONDUCT OF PROGRAMME |
The recommended program duration for elective and volunteering is four weeks. Participants are expected to be at their hostel of residence at least a day before the scheduled day of commencement of attachment.
The language used for teaching and learning in Ghana is English. Nurses and nurse assistants are always available to help with interpretation should you come across a patient who can not speak English.
Participants may either choose to have their attachment at a Specialists/Teaching Hospital or at a District (or Rural) Hospital.

SPECIALIST'S HOSPITAL |
Participant who opt for a Teaching or Specialist Hospital are expected to state their specialty of interest. Such applicant would be attached to the Special department of choice and work under the specialist in-charge. |
|
|
DISTRICT (RURAL) HOSPITAL |
A District hospitals (sometimes called Municipal Hospital) is the main hospital within a distal or municipality which serves as a referral for all health facilities in the whole district. Doctors in a district hospital are usually equipped with the skill to manage all forms of emergencies, be it sugical or medical. A district doctor may best be described as an all-round-doctor.
Participant on District (Rural) Hospital Attachment are made to rotate through all wards (Medical, Surgical, Maternity, Gynaecology, and Paediatric wards) provided the duration chosen would permit. Every participant is however encouraged to goes through the Emergency units namely the labour ward and the Casualty unit. Medical Students and Doctors are also made to join Surgeons at the operating theatres where they are allowed to observe surgical cases and in some cases allowed to act as second assistants.
For district hospital attachement, a participant may opt for a week attachment at a rural clinic (called health center).
Depending on the duration chosen by a participant, this schedule is re-adjusted appropriately to ensure that the participant benefits maximally from his or her visit.
Participants, irrespective of background are encouraged to join medical officers on their daily ward rounds as well as the once-a-week grand ward round. The Grand Ward Rounds brings together all doctors, pharmacists, nurse managers etc to share ideas about individual patient care plans and challenges all in the interest of patient care. |

At the emergency unit, medical students in their terminal years of training are encourage to attend to new cases under strict supervision of the doctor in charge. The essence of this is to encourage students to exercise their clinical prowess in arriving at diagnoses.
At the Health Centres, students under the supervision of the medical assistants in-charge are encouraged to take part in the general care offered to patients visiting such facilities. |

A Medical student or intern assigned to a ward is expected to review as many cases as he or she can and to discuss his or her findings with the medical doctor in charge of the ward. Please note that, students are not permitted to prescribe treatments for patients without authorisation. |
|
The last-but-one weekend of a participant's visit is usually dedicated for visiting tourist sites in the district or municipality. Participants are free to use their weekends for such tours. They could opt to cross regions to visit other tourist sites of interest. |
|
|
|
FEES, SETDOWN RULES & REGULATIONS |
All interested participants are expected to clearly declare their purpose
and intentions as detailed in the ON-LINE APPLICATION FORM. Applicants are required to send an up-to-date Resume or curriculum vitae. In addition, they would be required to provide at least one reference person.
Student applicants are expected to come along with a proof of status (School I.D. etc). Interns are to submit copies of their academic certificates.

PAYMENTS |
Royal Triangle Health Care and Volunteering program is essentially a non-profit making initiative.
Total contribution per student for a 4-week electives (accommodation inclusive) could be as low as $520 depending on applicant's preferences. |
Please note that the stated fee does not cater for feeding, travel insurance, flights, visa fees, work permits, airport taxes, return trip to the airport, vaccinations, day to day expenses in terms of food, bottled water, travels, snacks and soft drinks etc. These are solely the responsibility of the program participant.

Application Processing Fee: |
Each applicant would be required to pay application processing fee of $50 through PAYPAL or $ 80 when the applicant chooses to pay ON ARRIVAL.
N/B With
the exception of application processing fee which applicants could pay via PayPal, all other payments are to be made on arrival in Ghana.

Payable facilitation fees (Non-refundable) is
$ 120 .
Should a student opt for rotation in more than one hospital, an additional fee of $ 50 per added hospital will apply. |

Accommodation |
Participants are expected to pay for their own accommodation for the chosen period of elective. Royal Triangle has pre-arranged affordable shared accommodation for students. The houses used for this purpose are modestly equipped and provided with the necessary furnishing and other domestic household fittings to make life comfortable for students. |
|
With this arrangement students are expected to share a bungalow and facilities therein with other elective students. A maximum of two students share a room in our shared accommodation. This offer is however subject to availability.
Guaranteed in our accommodation are daily cleaning by cleaners, constant water supply and
24-hour security presence.
Participants are however expected to help keep the houses tidy at all times.

In summary, for a participant visiting a DISTRICT HOSPITAL for a four-week period and resident in our shared apartment, the total cost of electives could be as low as $ 470.
For a similar placement in a Specialist Hospital,
the total cost of electives could be as low as $ 640.
On the day of arrival however, there may be the need for students to be accommodated at a hotel or guest house depending on the distance from the airport to the chosen health facility. Please note that this is optional and the cost involved here would be borne by the student. Most conveniently, you could be housed at the Royal Triangle Guest House at an affordable rate of $18 per head for double-occupancy, and $30 for single occupancy.

OPTIONAL PAYMENTS |

They are as follows: |
AIRPORT PICK UPS AND TRANSPORT TO FACILITY
Interested participants pay a total of
$90 per head for pickup from Airport to facility of attachment within the Eastern Region of Ghana in a comfortable vehicle.
(For a group of three or more, total pick up charge payable is $67 per head instead $90).
Participants going to the Central Region of Ghana (Cape Coast precisely) pay a total pick up charge of
$110 per head ($88 for a group of three or more).
FIRST NIGHT HOTEL ACCOMMODATION
Depending on time of arrival and the distance from the airport to a chosen hospital or health facility, it may be necessary for a participant to be accommodated at a hotel or guest house on the day of arrival. Hotel or guest house accommodation charge for the night of arrival ranges between $30 to 80per head, depending on class of accommodation is available.
Where vailable, rooms at Royal Triange Guest House is offered to participants at $25 per head per night.
AIRPORT DROP OFF
At the end of program, rebated airport drop off charges for facilities within the Eastern Region of Ghana are as follows:
$ 80 for a single traveller
$ 60
per head for two travellers,
and
$50 per head for three or more travellers |

FOOD AND TRANSPORT
Numerous restaurants available offer both local and continental dishes. At the request of students, special arrangement could be made towards preparation of food for students. The cost involved would be borne solely by the requesting student or students. Cost per meal for such arranged foods is $ 7.00.
Public Buses and private Mini buses (popularly called Trotro) as well as Taxis are available to cater for all your transport needs. |

|
PRIVATE OR OFF-PROGRAMME TRAVELS |
Irrespective of the laudable hospitality of Ghanaians, we still advice that participants on private (unofficial) travels take good care of themselves and their belongings wherever they find themselves. Royal Triangle assumes no liability for items lost or other misfortunes encountered during such tours although we would offer every available support within our means in the event of a problem.

ACADEMIC TOURISM
|
As part of the Royal Triangle elective program, students are encouraged to take a tour of tourist attractions in the various Regions of Ghana. Among the various tourist sites at the Eastern Region of Ghana are the Aburi Botanical Gardens, the Boti, Akaah and Begoro Waterfalls, the Beads Market at Koforidua, the Volta Lake, The Akuapem and Kwahu Ridges and the Art and Craft Shops at Aburi. |

Students who opt to have their attachment at the Tamale Regional hospital benefit from their proximity to exciting tourist's sites in the Northern Region of Ghana.
At St. Theresa's hospital in the Upper West Region, a taste of the rich culture of the indigenous people couples with natural tourist attractions would be all yours to experience.
