CONDUCT OF PROGRAM

Placements are available all-year-round and for all healthcare students at any stage of their studies. Visiting persons get the opportunity to experience healthcare and medical practice in rural as well as semi-urban and urban Ghana.

The recommended program duration for elective and volunteering is four weeks. For such a four-week period, participants in a District (Rural) Hospital spends 3 weeks at the Hospital and one week at a rural clinic (called health centre). Depending on the duration chosen by a participant, this schedule is re-adjusted appropriately to ensure that the participant benefits maximally from his or her visit.
Students who opt for specialist attachment are attached to the appropriate specialist units of the hospital to work under the specialist in-charge.
Participants are not obliged to report to their units of attachment on weekends even though they are free to do so.

Students would be expected to actively participate in on-going activities in their departments. Medical students and Doctor interns would be expected to take part in the management of a wide range of health conditions using pure clinical skills.

At the hospitals, students and interns depending on their areas of interest, are attached to specific wards (Medical, Surgical, Maternity, Gynaecology, and Paediatric wards).

Medical Students and Doctor Interns attached to theatres get the opportunity to to join Surgeons at the operating theatres where they are allowed to observe surgeries and in some cases allowed to act as second assistants.

Depending on areas of interest, other healthcare students would be asgigned to specific units.

A Medical student assigned to a ward is expected to review as many cases as he or she can and to discuss his or her clinical findings with the medical doctor in charge of the ward. Students are not permitted to prescribe treatments for patients without authorisation.

At the emergency unit, medical students in their terminal years of training are encourage to attend to new cases under strict supervision of the doctor in charge. The essence of this is to encourage students to exercise their clinical prowess in arriving at diagnoses.

At the Health Centres, students under the supervision of the medical assistants in-charge are encouraged to take part in the general care offered to patients visiting such facilities.

Please note that the language used for teaching and learning in Ghana is English. Nurses and nurse assistants are always available to help with interpretation should you come across a patient who can not speak English.

ACCOMMODATION

Participants are expected to pay for their own accommodation for the chosen period of elective. Royal Triangle has pre-arranged affordable shared accommodation for students. The houses used for this purpose are modestly equipped and provided with the necessary furnishing and other domestic household fittings to make life comfortable for students.

With this arrangement students are expected to share a bungalow and facilities therein with other elective students.

A maximum of two students share a room in our shared accommodation. This offer is however subject to availability.

On the day of arrival in Ghana, there may be the need for students to be accommodated at a hotel or guest house depending on the distance from the airport to the chosen health facility. Please note that this is optional and the cost involved here would be borne by the participant.
